What a DAY! wow!!

We had the Feeding Assessment in Dallas today, it took us an hr & 15 minutes to get there- that was with NO traffic. Got there a tad early & Ryan did #2 in the portable potty that I keep in my car!  He is getting so good with potty training & not even 2yrs old yet!!

First we talked to by a dietician who asked a million questions (even tho I filled out a 29 page questionarre on each of the twins).  Then an occupational therapist (she had the kids play with a bunch of textures, blocks, balls and such), psychologist (she asked us a bunch of questions about their behavior) & a speech therapist (who watched them eat a couple things & tried to see if they had any issues with the muscles in their face.  We were there for 4hrs!  By the end the twins were cranky, bored & hungry.

We were told that the twins were not going to get inpatient therapy services because the insurance company wouldn't cover it.  Bummer!  But the more they told me about the inpatient therapy, I am not sure how we felt about that.  I would room in with the twins for 30 days, it would be like daycare & I would bring the twins to therapy in the morning then not see them again until 6pm.  I asked about naptime, she said naptime is 12-1pm- I said that won't work my kids sleep for 3 hrs each day!  She said naptime is 12-1pm... umm, kids under 2 need more than one hour naps!  Cranky sleepy kids won't respond well to afternoon therapy, then overtired kids won't sleep at night because they are overtired.

We did qualify for outpatient therapy for Feeding, Occupational therapy, and Psychology services 3 days a week. Here is the kicker- it is in Dallas!  Over an hr drive one-way and that is without traffic! Yikes.  But as long as they can get our appointments back to back & first thing in the morning, then it will not interfere with the twins afternoon nap.

They will call us back in 2-3wks to get us on the waitlist for services.  It could be after the first of the year before we start services but at least I know that we are going to get help and I feel great because they see that the kids need help & they WANT to help us!  I really think we would have gotten the inpatient services if we had better insurance.

We were told that the twins do not have muscle issues in their mouths that are causing the eating issues, so that is good.  But we found out that they both have alot of texture issues- with their mouths & hands.  They said that Jordan had issues touching wet or sticky objects.

So I now feel that a HUGE weight has lifted from me and I feel great that we are going to get help!

Hopefully the co-pays for insurance are not totally out of control.  Usually we pay $12 per child per service, so we will either pay $24 per day (which monthly is approx $288) or we will pay $72 per day (which monthly is approx. $864) plus the extra cost of all that gas driving back/forth.  Yikes!!  Okay, maybe I am stressing again- there is NO way we can't afford the latter and can barely afford the other.....

Oh- after the assessment, Jordan got her stitches out.  That wasn't fun. But she got her first sticker! And she walked around the rest of the day saying "sick-her".  Then Ryan tinkled in the portable potty that we keep in my car!!  Such a good boy!
