Ryan's GI Appointment

Appointment was at 8:15, we arrived at 8:00.  Dr didn't come in our room until after 9:00!  Yikes, that makes for some grumpy bored kiddos!

Ryan did not gain ANY weight from the last appointment 2 wks ago.  He will be 2 next month & weighs 19lbs 4ozs.  Doctor said he is losing weight & it would be best for him to have the G Button before he starts losing brain development. This is our biggest concern, not that he is so small but that this will effect his bones, teeth & brain development.

We explained to the doctor that we want to avoid the G Button, are there any other tests that we can run? They did an allergy blood test a couple weeks ago, the doctor said that it came back fine. There were milk & egg white reactions but he said it was extremely LOW so no need to even be concerned with it.

We said we don't even know if the reflux medication is working. So December 14th Ryan will undergo another endoscope & pH probe test.  The pH probe will stay in for 24hrs, Ryan will have to be in arm restraints again. This will not be easy on an almost 2yr old but if he pulls the probe out, then we have to take him back to the hospital & they will reinsert it while he is fully awake!  Yikes!!  While the probe is in, he will be hooked to a computer- we will have to push a button each time he eats, lays down, cries, burps.  Super fun.  During the surgery they are doing to insert a balloon into his stomach to try to stretch it.  This is the last thing they can do before the G Button.

We are hoping that this stretching thing works

But on a great proud note, Ryan has used the potty 3 times today (and it is only 11:20am)!!  He is doing so good with dry diapers, so proud!

  1. I am really sorry that your appointment didn't go better. One of my former patients wasn't gaining any weight, and now has a Mic-Key button (same thing as a G-button), and he has gained so much weight. Unless the feed is hooked up to the button, you can't tell he has anything in his tummy (it lays flat against his tummy). I know it's not something you want to have to do, but it's not the end of the world, a relatively minor procedure, and at least he'll be gaining weight and you won't have to worry about his brain, teeth, etc. And he won't have it forever. I hope the stomach stretching helps and that the pH probe study doesn't prove to be too stressful for you or Ryan! Yay on the potty training!!!!
